MEDICAL INDUSTRY APPLICATIONS

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
DNA Amplification
(Products: All XLT Modules)

In this application, specialized thermoelectric modules are used to thermal cycle a DNA sample along with synthetic DNA fragments in order to replicate the DNA sample strands. TE modules used for this application have to be extremely rugged to withstand the stresses created by the temperature cycling process. XLT modules are designed to be highly reliable under such conditions.
Uses
PCR technology is used in bio-analytical applications that include:
  • Amplification of Human – Specific DNA sequences
  • Direct sequencing of PCR products
  • Detecting mutations
  • Disease diagnostics
  • Drug development
  • Monitoring cancer therapy
  • Detecting bacterial and viral infections
  • Sex determination of prenatal cells
  • Forensic fingerprinting from collected evidence
  • Eventually play a role in identifying individuals with cancer susceptible genes

Thermoelectric Advantages
TE modules are ideally suited for PCR applications because they can be made to both heat and cool at a predetermined rate by using a bi-directional power supply under computer control.

Marlow Thermoelectric Benefits
Marlow XLT thermoelectric modules are specifically designed to withstand the continuous temperature excursions required in PCR use. The XLT modules also offer rapid heating and cooling that cannot be achieved by other methods. XLT modules far exceed the reliability of any other thermal cycling module on the market today. Contact Marlow Medical for testing data.

Marlow has experience in designing and manufacturing complete thermoelectric assemblies for PCR applications. By letting Marlow design and manufacture the entire thermoelectric assembly, you can be assured of achieving the best possible performance and reliability. The goal of Marlow Industries is to meet or exceed your expectations.

Blood Analyzers
(Products: AT, DT, and SP Modules)

Modern blood chemistries are performed using automated blood analyzers. These new diagnostic tools have improved the overall efficiency of analytical work as well as permitting the different types of tests to be increased. In this application, an assembly using thermoelectric modules is used to maintain the blood analyzer reagents at a constant temperature.

Uses
The most frequently performed hematological laboratory test is the complete blood count (CBC). However other tests may be included. The tests included in a CBC are as follows:

  • White blood cell count (WBC count)
  • Red blood cell count (RBC count)
  • Platelet count
  • Hemoglobin (Hgb)
  • Hematocrit (Hct)
  • Differential white blood cell count (Diff)
  • Red blood cell indices

Thermoelectric Advantages
The major advantages of using thermoelectric temperature control in blood analyzers are high reliability and maintenance free operation. However, even though thermoelectric modules are inherently reliable, they must be properly integrated into an assembly otherwise their reliability can be impaired.

Marlow Benefits
Marlow Industries, Inc. has designed and manufactured TE modules and provided complete TE assemblies for over 25 years. Standard modules are available and custom modules can be designed and manufactured that specifically meet the exact needs of your application. Marlow also offers the service of integrating the modules into a complete TE assembly that is ready to drop into your equipment. When Marlow provides the complete assembly, you can be assured of the best possible performance and reliability. At the heart of all designs is a complete and thorough thermal analysis and modeling study. The goal of Marlow Industries is to meet or exceed your expectations.

High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC)
(Products: AT, DT and SP module series)

In this application, thermoelectric modules are used to control the temperature of a chromatographic column. The column is used to separate a mixture of compounds as they are partitioned between a liquid mobile phase and a stationary solid phase within the column. Temperature plays an important role in being able to resolve the different compound peaks as they exit the column and are detected.

Uses
Chromatography equipment is used to analyze for compounds that are dissolved in a solvent. The ability to separate or resolve the compounds in a sample is determined by the choice of the column packing (stationary phase), the nature of the mobile phase (carrier for the sample) and the flow rate and temperature of the column.

Some of the applications of chromatography are as follows:

  • Research for analyzing complex mixtures
  • Purifying chemical compounds
  • Developing processes for synthesizing chemical compounds
  • Isolating natural products
  • Predicting physical properties of compounds
  • Quality control to ensure product purity
  • Evaluations of product stability
  • Analyzing air and water for pollutants
  • Monitoring pesticide levels in the environment
  • Monitoring food and drug products
  • Analyze confiscated narcotics

Thermoelectric Advantages
The ability to easily adjust temperature either above or below ambient make thermoelectrics ideal for chromatography applications. This cannot be accomplished by any other means without a complex heating and cooling system. Other advantages of thermoelectric technology include its high reliability, maintenance free operation and small size.

Electrophoresis
(Products: AT, DT, and SP Modules)

Electrophoresis is an analytical tool for separating charged molecules using different rates of migration through a gel in an electrical field. In this application, thermoelectric temperature control is applied uniformly to the gel in order to improve resolution of the different molecules. Electrophoresis has typically been the mainstay for protein separation.

Uses
Electrophoresis is used extensively in the separation of DNA, RNA and protein molecules. It has become a key tool in genetic study.

Thermoelectric Advantages
The ability to easily adjust temperature either above or below ambient make thermoelectrics ideal for electrophoresis applications. This cannot be accomplished by any other means without a complex heating and cooling system. Other advantages of thermoelectric technology include its high reliability, maintenance free operation and small size.

Therapy Pads & Blankets
(Products: AT, DT and SP Modules)

In this application, thermoelectric modules are used to cool or heat a liquid that flows through a pad or blanket in a closed loop system.

Uses
Hot and cold compresses have been used for years for muscle therapy and postoperative rehabilitation. Unlike compresses or water bottles, pads with thermoelectrically cooled or heated liquid flowing through them can maintain a constant temperature for an indefinite period. Also the system can be programmed to alternate between hot and cold as desired. Blankets with thermoelectrically cooled or heated liquid flowing through them can be programmed to slowly raise or lower body temperature as required.

Thermoelectric Advantages
TE modules are ideally suited for therapy pads and blankets because they can easily be made to either heat or cool by using a bi-directional power supply. If computer control is used in conjunction with the bi-directional power supply, the temperature profile can be customized to suit the particular application. Other advantages of thermoelectric technology include its high reliability, maintenance free operation, small size and quiet operation.
