Technical Ladder

Purpose

The success of II-VI Marlow has historically been supported by the innovative skills of our technical personnel – scientists, engineers and other technologists involved in the development of innovative products and the processes and facilities needed for their manufacture. This procedure is intended to formalize a career ladder for the technical personnel at II-VI Marlow, personnel whose primary job function is technically oriented. The technical career ladder parallels that available to those whose skills are directed to management. This "Technical Ladder" provides equal opportunity for personal recognition, salary, responsibility and ultimately, eligibility to corporate officership to those selected individuals who make continued and outstanding technical contributions to II-VI Marlow.

Scope

This document describes the current policy and practices of II-VI Marlow, Inc. and will be interpreted, administered and amended by II-VI Marlow within its sole discretion. This procedure is not intended to and does not confer a commitment or contract of employment, legal rights or impose legal obligations.

Designation of Levels and Eligibility

All members of the II-VI Marlow technical population are eligible for technical ladder designation. The II-VI Marlow technical population includes technicians, engineers, scientists, mathematicians and other technologists who are engaged in product research or development, manufacturing, project engineering, quality assurance or other technically sophisticated activities.

In ascending order of recognition, the levels in the II-VI Marlow Technical Ladder shall be:

  • Technician
  • Senior Technician
  • Engineering Associate
  • Engineer/Scientist
  • Certified Engineer/Scientist
  • Senior Engineer/Scientist
  • Member Technical Staff
  • Senior Member Technical Staff
  • Marlow Fellow


A summary of the definitions and guidelines are provided below. These definitions are intended to be used as guidelines only and not as strict, rigid criteria.

Technician
A II-VI Marlow technician shall be capable of performing various technical tasks using basic engineering/electronics principles and techniques. Technicians shall typically have a technical Associate degree or equivalent industrial experience. Technicians shall be capable of solving moderately complex mechanical, electronic and/or process problems involved in the operation of products, processes or equipment. Work is typically performed under the supervision of a senior technician or engineer. Draftspersons are also included in this designation.

Senior Technician
A senior technician shall provide a wide variety of technical support tasks using basic engineering/electronics principles and techniques to solve complex problems. Senior technicians shall have assisted in the design, development, construction and testing of developmental equipment and processes. This designation also includes mechanical designer draftsperson. In addition, the following selection guidelines shall apply:

  • Technical AA degree or equivalent industrial experience
  • 3-5 years applicable experience
  • Operates with limited supervision
  • Capable of summarizing and analyzing results from test


Engineering Associate
An engineering associate shall provide a wide variety of technical support and/or design tasks using basic engineering/electronics principles and techniques to solve complex problems. Engineering associates shall have played key roles in the design, development, construction and testing of developmental equipment or processes. In addition, the following selection guidelines shall apply:

  • Technical AA degree or equivalent industrial experience
  • 5+ years applicable experience
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, define and execute design tasks with limited supervision and direction
  • Commands a good understanding of II-VI Marlow standard practices and procedures
  • Commands a good understanding of thermoelectrics relative to their job function


Engineer/Scientist
A II-VI Marlow engineer/scientist shall have successfully completed an accredited four-year engineering/scientific curriculum or have equivalent engineering/scientific experience. In addition, the engineer/scientist must be functioning at II-VI Marlow in a position utilizing his/her technical training. Work assignments shall require theoretical knowledge at the BS degree level, whether acquired through schooling or practical experience. Duties of the engineer/scientist are typically performed under supervision of a more experienced engineer/scientist. This is the entry-level engineer/scientist classification.
